Basic Rules of Badminton

Badminton is a fast-paced racket sport played across a net using a shuttlecock. Understanding the basic rules of badminton helps beginners follow matches and participate confidently. The game can be played in singles or doubles format, and points are scored through a rally system. Clear structure and simple scoring make badminton accessible while still allowing for high-level competition.

Objective of the Game

The main objective in badminton is to score points by hitting the shuttlecock over the net and landing it inside the opponent’s court. A rally begins with a serve and continues until the shuttlecock lands out of bounds or a fault is committed. Matches are played in a best-of-three games format, with each game played to 21 points. A player or team must win by at least two points.

Structure and Format of Play

Badminton can be played as singles with one player per side or doubles with two players per side. The court dimensions vary slightly between singles and doubles play. Serves must be hit diagonally into the correct service court and below waist height. After each rally, the side that wins the point also wins the serve.

Key Rules and Violations

Common faults include hitting the shuttlecock out of bounds, striking it more than once on the same side, or touching the net with the racket or body. Players must keep the shuttle within court boundaries and follow proper serving rules. Referees or umpires oversee official matches to ensure consistent enforcement of regulations.
